Average speed 13.6. Top speed 40.1. British Day.
A short ride in the morning to Arromanche – to our base for the morning – a hill above the beaches. Arromanche is the town where the British built the Mulberry Harbour – a most incredible engineering feat – a harbour built in sections in Southern England then towed across the channel to ensure that all the supplies needed by an army could be unloaded. An excellent service overlooking the harbour – the peddling padre being on fine form – a 15 minute amusing talk without notes followed by wreath laying ceremony. The best thing about being at the top of the hill is when one starts cycling again it is downhill all the way. The route took us along the coast and at certain key points the Guild of Battlefield Tour Guides who are travelling with us told us about individual battles as well as telling the overall D-Day story. Night at a small hotel on the outskirts of Caen – very upmarket in comparison to the second day - the rooms had an extra square feet of space, and there was a bar and restaurant on site. On the food stakes it is all perfectly adequate. Lunch is provided by an excellent company called Extreme Catering and they do an excellent job – the pasta meatballs for lunch were memorable. Food in the hotels is basic but nourishing – and washed down with copious quantities of cheap French red wine is perfectly acceptable.

Day 1 -- American Forces Day

50.2 miles, average speed 14.8, top speed 38.1.

The start of the ride itself was at St Mere Eglis which was the town where the first allied troops landed – paratroopers from 82nd and 101st Airborne (US). To be in the town on the day the anniversary of the event was quite special and the place was buzzing with some old soldiers and quite a few “new soldiers” – individuals who dress up in old uniforms and drive around in old military jeeps. A strange hobby – but it appears popular. The first of our ceremonies took place in the town square with one of the wreaths being paid by a serving member of the 101st – a young man from San Antonio, Texas with a prosthetic leg - an Afghanistan casualty. The ceremonies are good – we have our own “peddling padre” – a current vicar from the midlands who used to be a Greenjacket, a bugler from the Royal Artillery and a piper from the Highland regiment. Controlling us all is the old Regimental Corporal Major (Equivalent to RSM) of the Blues and Royals – to ensure that everything runs smoothly – and we are in the right place at the right time!

We have been joined on this trip by a team of 10 US wounded from Operation Comfort – to add to our own Headley Court team, so there are 8 hand powered (sit down) bikes as well as servicemen with missing limbs. So no complaining about sore legs from the rest of us! The highlight of the day was the afternoon ceremony at the American ceremony above Omaha Beach – if you have not been there it is highly recommended – acre upon acre of gravestones – all immaculately laid out and really quite a beautiful and serene part of the world.

Overnight in the Premiere Classe hotel – a misnomer if ever there was one. 3 to a room and one had to stand up in turn – it worked though and even the non-snorer in the room claimed to have slept well (poor fellow).

The Off

How quickly time flies! Today is the day and we all assemble to head to France. I am with a small group who have volunteered to be an advance party - heading over to France this afternoon on the fast ferry to overnight near the start tomorrow - with the rest of the team coming over on the overnight ferry (original large ferry not working so quite a few having to sleep in chairs - not fun). Delighted to see that the BBC news this morning has an article about our efforts. (And I cannot work out how to create a link - sorry! Please have a look at the BBC news web site!)

One week to go

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tQ_glFRJXJM/TeH2N1eGn2I/AAAAAAAAAQQ/WlCUenQW5tc/s320/Dubai%2B15%2BMay.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612037328232423266" />

With only a week to go before the 2011 Bike Battlefield Bike Ride, the nerves are starting to kick in. Am I going to be fit enough? Probably not - and indeed considering the severe lack of training this year I will probably suffer. I am heartened though to hear that we will be accompanied by 2 teams of wounded soldiers - one from the Uk and another from the US. So - no complaining!

As in previous years I will attempt to maintain this blog during the week - however this will be subject to getting adequate internet connections in the rather small French hotels we will be staying in. Based on previous years normally every other day.

The full itinerary for the ride is below and for those with time on their hands my reports of the 2 previous rides are lower down this blog!

INTRODUCTION
Our exciting cycle challenge takes us from Southwick Park in Portsmouth – a hugely important part of naval history – across the channel to Le Havre and Northern France. Our challenging ride traces some of the region’s most significant WW2 battle sites, including the Northern beaches around Arromanches, and the area south of Caen which witnessed the culmination of Operation Goodwood. This will be a great physical challenge, but also an amazing emotional journey. We finish our challenge by cycling through central Paris, via the Arc de Triomphe before finishing at the Eiffel Tower.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Portsmouth – Le Havre
We meet for registration in Portsmouth where there is a rare opportunity to visit the D-Day map room, from where Eisenhower made all his tactical decisions, and also some of the museums at Southwick Park. We’ll then have a send-off supper at Southwick House before cycling down to the ferry terminal, leaving our bikes with the transport crew and boarding the overnight ferry to Le Havre.
Cycle approx 5 miles

Day 2: Ste Mere Eglise – Bayeux
Disembarking from the ferry, we board coaches and travel to our start point on the Cherbourg Peninsula, Ste Mere Eglise. Here, the first French town to be liberated in 1944, we will remember the American Airborne Forces and lay the first of our memorial wreaths in a special ceremony. After looking around the Airborne Museum we continue on to visit the main American landing beach, Omaha, before heading for our night stop in the beautiful town of Bayeux. Overnight hotel.
Cycle approx 55 miles

Day 3: Bayeux – Caen
Today – the British Day – we visit the coast where the troops landed. First we tour the museum at Arromanches and see the film footage of the historical events that took place. After a moving wreath-laying, we head onto the Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches, where guides will be waiting to deliver some history at your leisure. From here we continue on to Pegasus Bridge, where the first house to be liberated from the Germans in June 1944 still stands. Here we are piped over the Bridge by Pipers and after a gathering and historical briefing we ride to our hotel in Caen as the bugler sounds The Advance. Overnight hotel.
Cycle approx 45 miles

Day 4: Caen – Lisieux
Today, the Canadian and Polish are remembered as we cycle from Caen down to Falaise, where the Germans were very nearly defeated! After a stop in the square to hear the Guides explain how close it was, we take a spectacular climb to the Mace. Here we will lay a wreath to commemorate the Polish soldiers, before continuing on to Lisieux. Overnight hotel.
Cycle approx 75 miles

Day 5: Lisieux – Evreux
The French Resistance and Special Forces Day, today we will remember the brave soldiers as well as women and civilians and hear the stories of the much celebrated SOE (Special Operation Executive) Agents, who parachuted into the countryside to work undercover against the enemy. We will have SOE individuals who were there at the time, as well as modern-day SOEs, when we remember those no longer with us. We shall once again lay a wreath in the memory of resistance fighters. Then we continue to Evreux. Overnight hotel.
Cycle approx 55 miles

Day 6: Evreux – Paris
Free French day – the liberation of Paris. An exciting day today, as it was back then, as we cycle eastwards and follow the route many soldiers took in the liberation of Paris. With personal memories from those who were there, we cycle towards the capital city where a wonderful celebration welcome awaits us. A wreath will be laid at the Arc de Triomphe as we cycle past, and on down the Champs Elysees to our finishing point at the iconic Eiffel Tower. This is a long, emotional yet rewarding day to finish the cycle challenge! All cyclists will be part of a celebratory evening reception at a hotel in Paris. Overnight hotel.
Cycle approx 70 miles

Day 7: Paris – London
Arriving about 6pm

The End

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/TAUjDh9qikI/AAAAAAAAAP0/--tmp3-xxHo/s320/IMG_3279.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477823065329666626" />
What a tremendous week. Cycled 320 miles in 5 days - averaging 64 miles per day, and for those who thought Northern France was flat - it isn't! Body is a bit stiff and cream still needs to be applied, other than that no problems.

Best bits:
1. Most emotional. Ceremony at Theiphal memorial to those thousands who were killed on the Somme whose bodies were never found - not a dry eye in the house.
2. Worst ceremony. Dunkirk - organised by the French whose sense of ceremony is not to the British taste. Not assisted by one of the French veterans dropping dead at Bryn Parry's side cuasing the event to be delayed.
3. Hardest day. Day 3 - 81 miles in the rain between Dieppe and Amiens. over 100 punctures dueing the day - I got one, which was kindly mended by two ex officers - I was praised for my supervision skills.
4. Best experience. Being "evacuated" from Dunkirk on landing craft which then went to the Mother Ship - HMS Largs Bay, and in the dark we drove inside the ship, lined by Royal Marines - rather resembling a scene from a James Bond film. After an overnight stay on board in 24 man bunks (interesting) - we were landed again in the landing craft on Dover Beach to a great welcome.
5. Most difficult decision. Having chosen a middle bunk on Largs Bay and having discarded cycling shorts prior to going to bed, getting up in the morning, not having room to put shorts back on and having to decide whether to get out of bed on my front or back. Luckily, the guy on the bunk below had his curtain drawn!
6. Best meal. Steak frites in a restaurant not far from Menin Gate in Ypres.
7. Best drink. The first beer of every evening.
8. Fastest day. Day 4. Average 13.8 mph between Arras and Ypres - after a few hills in the morning, flat ride through the French mining district.
9. Worst roads. In Belgium - which interestingly was not signed on the way in.
10. Most interesting view. Looking at the field where on Christmas Day 1915 the British and German troops had a game of football. Sadly, the Germans won 3-2. Within 500 yards each side of the field was based a certain Liutenant Colonel Winston Churchill (after the Dardenells disaster) and 500 yards the other way a Corporal Adolf Hitler. Sadly not at the same time - but only a few months apart.
11. Best hotel. Did rather well in that the room mate I had been allocated failed to turn up for the ride, so most nights had a room to myself. Sheer luxury. Hotels all clean and serviceable - one star.
12. Most amusing crash. Right at the very end, a brother officer, Andrew Stuart Mills crashing after the final parade at Dunkirk and being assisted to his feet by a veteran.
13. Best fly-by. A Spitfire over Dover harbour on the last morning. Absolutely magnificent and on a number of occasions he was below the level of the ship and those on shore thought he had crashed into us.
14. Best parachute display. The Red Devils (Parachute Regiment display team)doing a spectacular display into Dover harbour.
15. Best fund raising effort. The father of a soldier killed a year ago in Afghanistan who raised 93,000 pounds for the ride and although I did not meet him he was a great person, and still heavily grieving for his son.
16. Best example. While awaiting our landing craft in Dunkirk - a mere 5 hours all told - remembering that 70 years ago 320,000 British troops were doing the same - but for days while being bombed and strafed.
17. Best Hill. The feature of Cassel, about 25 miles outside of Dunkirk, which was when the last time that a unit of the British Army were ordered to defend it to the last man. An interesting ascent - steep uphill on cobble stones! Great for thin tyres.
18. Best Padre. We had the Peddling Padre with us who cycled the full distance and then donned his robes over his lycra daily for a memorial service at the various stops.
19. Best example of the impact of poor communications and sheer courage. The Canadian positions at Beaumont Hamel where the first battalion attack went over and were all mown down by 2 machine guns within 50 yards. The second battalion were then ordered to do the same - with the same result. The third attack was again ordered, and they had to climb over the bodies of their comrades to meet the same fate. Meanwhile the Brigade commander had no idea about what was happening because the runners sent back to report were all killed - and the carrier pigeons had met a similar fate.

All in all, a truly emotional, fun, amusing, sad, entertaining, inspirational, reflective, and tiring experience. And we raised over one million pounds! Thank you all who supported me.

Do look at the Help for Heroes web site for the videos of each day and photos. http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/bbbr_2010.html

Home!

Now home after a brilliant but tiring week. The team who organise the whole event are from a company called Discovery Adventure – a great crew however their basic appreciation of time and distance can take some getting used to. At the morning briefing we were told that the first stop was 4 miles – well 11.9 miles later we arrived at the Australian monument! We now ask whether the mileage being quoted is a DA estimate or real! I could give you all a history tour of the first world war, however there are very good and voluminous books you can read if you are interested. We were well supported by our Commonwealth troops, and Australia was the most supportive. Out of a small population (in 1914 the whole country numbered 3 million people) – 10% (all men) volunteered to fight of whom 50% were killed. What an impact on a nation! Accordingly there are some splendid monuments which we visited commemorating their sacrifices. Continuing with Australia, a mass grave of Australians was found last year and a new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery built (the first for 40 years). The last of the bodies is due to be buried in July – attended by the Australian and British Prime Ministers and other dignitaries.
Throughout the route we passed cemetery after cemetery – often within a 100 yards of the last. Phenomenal the number of dead. Each country has however a memorial to those soldiers who died but whose bodies were never recovered. The British one is at Thiepval (pictured – apologies for the quality, camera battery has died). The white limestone columns contain a proportion of the British names (the plan was to build 3 such monuments but then, as now, the government was broke and the other 2 were not built). Of great personal interest was finding the name of Amanda’s great, great uncle – Captain George Fussell of the Warwickshire Regiment. Now the Warwicks take up a whole face of one of those columns – hundreds of names. We had a most emotional ceremony and at the end there was not a dry eye amongst us and some were openly sobbing.
The Canadians not only have memorials but some are national monuments – and as such are manned by Canadians sent out from Canada on 4 month postings. A visit to one such memorial was at Beaumont-Hamel. What was fascinating is that the trench system has been preserved – and one can see how close the 2 sides were – and really imagine the wholesale slaughter that took place.
On route to Arras, passing more ceremonies I was passing someone who had stopped at one of the smaller cemeteries who said – “I prefer the smaller ones because I can then blub without anyone else seeing”.
Finally we visited the caves of Arras – where not only 24,000 soldiers sheltered from the artillery fire prior to the Battle of Arras in 1917, but where the New Zealand tunnel engineers built 27 miles of tunnel, in the rock only using picks and shovels out from the British lines so that the troops emerged just in front of the enemy lines. Fascinating.
Room a luxury – by myself! Investment in the cream was a good move and as each day progresses I am fitter than before!

Day 3 - Dunkirk to Amiens

Day 3- Dunkirk to Amiens
81 miles (most ever in a single day), average speed 12.2 mph and maximum 32.3 mph

We left a damp and grey Dunkirk for a long day through the damp and grey French countryside. One quickly learns that when in the morning briefing you are promised some spectacular views these are not generally from the valley bottoms! At the top of all the big hills though our accompanying piper was playing us up – something rather surreal about cycling through the French countryside to the far distant sounds of Scotland the Brave. Today was a slog, and very few made it to the one memorial service as we so spread out – several hours between the first and last. Lunch was spectacular – there is something great on a wet and cold day being greeted by mountains of hot pasta bake and steaming urns of tea! Having given myself plenty of time to pack I did forget one vital item – the Udderley cream, so I stopped at a French pharmacie for a substitute. I thought Sudocreme was a fairly international brand, however the two rather pretty yound serving girls played ignorant as I then had to explain what I wanted – or more to the point (my schoolboy French being somewhat limited) – demonstrate why I needed it! After much hilarity and bemusement I came away with some cream which I was told was excellent. I am now looking for a French speaker to have a look at the packaging before I try it – the last thing I need is some form of deep heat! Good hotel, red wine plentiful and sleep deep….

Days 1 and 2 - Monday/Tuesday

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/S_37KWwSQPI/AAAAAAAAAPU/EWaEzBrcPTg/s320/IMG_3249.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475808877277757682" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/S_37KHnAt5I/AAAAAAAAAPM/JGPVegbIbG0/s320/IMG_3251.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475808873212327826" />
Now that I have internet access:

Day 1 and 2 – Departure and the road to Dieppe
48 miles, average speed 11.2, maximum speed 35 mph.

Assembly on Monday was at HMS Victory dockyard – 299 keen, lean cyclists – and me! In fact what was noticeable is that a large proportion of riders were there to “do their bit” and there were mothers whose sons were serving in the forces, a good number with missing limbs – 2 on sit down bikes, one with peddles and one hand powered and about half a dozen single amputees, a fair few ex military and some who had no connection at all with the military.

HMS Victory was looking spectacular in the summer sun, and the guides did an excellent job showing us around. At full compliment the ships company had 850 men and 5 women. When showing around a group of nuns last week, one of the guides was asked by the Mother Superior what the task of the women was, he had to think quickly, and replied – they were the cooks. The Mother Superior replied – ah, the oldest profession.

The band of he Royal Marines gave a spectacular beating the retreat in front of HMS Victory and the past post was played for the first time. A fine and stirring speech from the Second Sea Lord, and we were off – 2 miles to the ferry port.

As you can imagine, the ferry bar was pretty busy but they did managed to keep us supplied with an ample supply of sleeping juice – before adjourning to our 4 man berths. Too few hours later it was up and about and onto buses at Caen for a 2 hour journey to the start – a small village outside Le Havre.

At the start, we were welcomed by the mayor in his finery and around the graveyard containing 5 commonwealth graves we were given a fine rendition of “God save ze grazious Queen” by the local children. After a bacon sandwich prepared by the amazing “Extreme Catering” in the village car park, and a fine glass of cider royale (like Kir Royals but with cider) it was off.

Who said Northern France was flat! They do have white cliffs, and pretty sea side towns and villages and plenty of “S” bend roads. Lunch stop was to remember the soldiers of the 51st Highland division who fought gallantly against Rommel's 7th Panzer division in 1940 (post Dunkirk) at their cliff top memorial. Our accompanying bandsmen are excellent – a young piper from the Scots Guards, a bugler from the Rifles and a trumpeter from the Gunners. A fine bunch. Also escorting us are two young Household Cavalry NCO’s – to keep us in order. Both fresh back from Afghanistan – interesting to chat to.

The final stop was Dieppe where we commemorated the landings by the Canadians in 1942. Not the finest hour for Allied Operations – but incredible courage – 2 VC’s were won.

As I write this (on Wednesday morning) we are just post an amazing thunderstorm and it is difficult to tell the sea and sky apart. More to follow….

The Off

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/S_ojtVgaI5I/AAAAAAAAAPE/iNdXUDXUDq8/s320/IMG_3236.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474727558796419986" />
Well, today is the off on another epic adventure! Final celebration dinner in Dover Castle.

Monday – return home.

I will attempt to update this blog on route – but please bear with me if these are infrequent as some of these cheaper end French hotels aren’t renowned for their wireless connectivity!

If you want to see why I am doing this – then have a look at the profiles of some of the people on the ride with me: http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/bbbr_featured_2010.html

Final Training in Dubai

A picture from earlier this year, but please be assured I did cycle past the Burj Al Arab hotel this week - just that at the time of the morning I was doing it there were precious few tourists around to take a happy snappy - and I was pretty keen on just getting on. Managed to ride every morning (bar one) on a pretty useful bike hired from Wolfi's bike shop in Dubai. So quite a few miles done - and cycling here is quite exciting. The main roads I tried to avoid - too exciting - therefore the side roads were the option, and every day I ended up on a road which either went off in the wrong direction - or just stopped. On one occasion, I was on a bridge which was only half built! Consequence was to pick up bike and trek across the desert to the next road (never too far away) - lift bike over barriers and off we would go again (we being me and the bike!). There are worse places to be training - and plenty of miles cycled - though it doesn't really count as Dubai is as flat as a pancake and the only undulations were either overpasses or underpasses! London tomorrow - then final training in Wiltshire planned for the weekend before the off (24th).

The Final Weeks

Last Sunday I took part in an organised ride - The Jurassic Beast - 65 miles around the coastal hills of Dorset. Those of you who were here to experience our fine bank holiday weather will recall that it was cold, wet and very windy. The delights! Added to which the route was a tad bumpy - with over 4,500 feet ascended over the day. A good test of fitness - and lo and behold, I came to the conclusion that I have a way to go yet! A couple of firsts during the day - trying to mend a puncture - and went through 2 inner tubes in 45 minutes before some kind gentleman took pity and fixed the problem in 2 minutes - must be practice! The second is what is called in the trade the "horizontal stop". On the bottom of my shoes I have cleats which clip into the medals - ensuring the feet are fixed in - I am told it gives one more power! Anyway, the knack is to un-clip before coming to a halt, otherwise you stop, feet still firmly anchored to the pedals and you topple over. So I managed it - at the 40 miles water stop just to give quite a decent sized group something to keep them amused. Hopefully I will not repeat it again.

Only 2 weeks to go now - and I am going to have to hire a bike in Dubai this next week to keep the training going - and the following week is going to be busy with 3 nights in London. Lots of eating and drinking - which will be good training for the evening activities, but I suspect will not assist during the day! I am therefore anticipating that a bit of grit and determination will be needed this year! Anyway, what's 350 miles between friends! At least I will have all my limbs, which will be more than some of the other riders.

Departure date is 24th May - far too close for comfort!

If any of the readers of this have not donated, and wish to - there is a link to a very simple on-line donation site on this page. Time is getting pretty short. I did manage to buy a go-faster bike though over the Easter weekend (an adequate second hand Specialized for those who care) and been on a couple of rides since - nothing great - total of 52 miles. Now having a few days off resting a few aches and pains - a sign of old age! - however I keep reminding myself that I must not complain as there will be others on the ride who will have lost limbs.

Planning to start riding to the station this week. 13 miles each way, with about half over the tracks of Salisbury Plain. It should be a lovely way to start the day, however having been out this morning at the appointed start time (5.30)it was still on the dark side of twilight. The charts tell me that towards the end of the week this will be better - I do hope so as I don't fancy having to negotiate the potholes of the tank tracks in the dark!

The 2010 Route

The updated 2010 Help for Heroes route has just been published - 315 miles over 5 days from Le Havre to the famous Second World War port of Dieppe then inland through the historic First World War battlefield regions of Amiens, Arras and Ypres before finishing at Dunkirk to coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the evacuation of our troops in 1940. A spectacular route - and from the itinerary quite a few more undulations than last year! To quote the organisers: "This will be a great physical challenge and also an amazing emotional journey".

The full route is:

Day 1: Portsmouth - Caen
We will have a great send-off from HMS Victory in Portsmouth’s Naval Dockyard. After a spectacular parade we will cycle to the ferry terminal and catch the evening overnight ferry to Caen. We are allocated our cabins and have a good night’s sleep – ready for an early start and a challenging day tomorrow!
Cycle 2 miles

Day 2: Le Havre - Dieppe
We arrive in France at around 7am local time. We shall transfer directly onto buses and make the short journey by coach to our starting point in Fecamp, a coastal fishing town outside of Le Havre. Here we will mount our bikes and begin cycling eastwards to Dieppe. We make our way to St Valery-en-Caux where the 51st Highland Division, part of the British Expeditionary Force, attempted to evacuate Northern France in June 1940. The attempt failed due to fog. We will walk to the cliff-top memorial to the soldiers that died, which overlooks the small coastal town and beach. Our cycle continues along the beautiful, but hilly coastal road to Dieppe with stops at several other points along the route where there are memorials to the events of both the D-Day landings and the earlier BEF evacuations. Cycle approx 50 miles

Day 3: Dieppe – Amiens
From Dieppe we cycle inland, gradually climbing away from the coast along country roads, passing through hamlets and small towns, stopping maybe for a cool drink in a typical village café. The terrain becomes testing and undulating as we head into the French countryside where the aftermath of the First World War remains apparent by the small military cemeteries dotted around the landscape. We will stop at two of these en route, the first at Grandcourt, where 29 British and Commonwealth soldiers are buried. In addition we visit the Cauillon and Crouy British Cemetery. The route we take is beautiful; through rolling farmland and woodland. We spend the night in Amiens, relaxing after a long day in the saddle. Cycle approx 75 miles

Day 4: Amiens – Arras
Today is our most thought provoking ride as we explore the tragic battle sites of the First World War. We leave Amiens following the River Somme heading north east through small villages towards Albert. As we progress, the cemeteries and memorials become ever more frequent as we ride on into the heart of the Somme. We cycle on to Thiepval, which is the main memorial to the lost French and British soldiers who gave their lives during that terrible time. After exploring the area, including the Beaumont Hamel trenches, we carry on cycling north-east, finally finishing in the town of Arras with a visit to the underground tunnels that housed the Allied Troops.
Cycle approx 70 miles

Day 5:. Arras – Ypres
Leaving Arras behind us we head directly North on a tough cycle via the Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge and on to the smaller cemeteries such as those at Vermelles and Festubert. Fromelles is where the most recent WW1 burial ground was found, so we shall remember those who fell here at the brand new memorial built in 2009. Heading north of Armentieres there is the opportunity to hear our Battlefield Guides talk at Ploegsteert and to visit the memorial which commemorates nearly 11,000 servicemen who died in WWI mostly during day-to-day trench warfare. From here we complete the final stretch into Ypres, an immensely historic town where we shall join the evening ceremony held daily at the Menin gate. Cycle approx 70 miles

Day 6: Ypres – Dunkirk
Our penultimate day will see us traverse the flatter lands of the Belgian/French border to join in a spectacular celebration with the townspeople of Dunkirk to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the evacuation of both French and British troops. We will start early and head up towards the port town on this special day, following the route taken by many soldiers who were on foot. Cycling along the coast towards Dunkirk we will arrive at the beach memorial to those soldiers who lost their lives so close to being free, and witness a special ceremony to remember those who fought here. The Association of Dunkirk Little Ships will welcome us with 50 small ships which were active in the evacuation taking our men to safety 70 years ago. After the ceremony we will take time for lunch away from the bustle and hear the story of Dunkirk from our Battlefield Historian guides before returning to the centre of Dunkirk to watch the parade of veterans march past the Town Hall; a moving spectacle. From here we shall take our bikes for a final pedal, from the town to the port area were we will end our cycle in style. The bikes will be packed away and we shall enjoy an early supper before we head out to HMS Largs Bay, where the Royal Navy is hosting us on board off shore from Dunkirk for the night. Cycle approx: 50 miles

Day 7: Dunkirk - Dover
We will have the chance to reflect on the Dunkirk evacuation from the deck of HMS Largs Bay as we hold our final wreath laying ceremony out at sea looking back on the historic town. We will then be transported over the Channel by the Royal Navy, subject to operational permissions, to land at Dover on the beaches mid afternoon. (Please note: this is subject to change and may be replaced by a Calais – Dover passenger ferry crossing). We will be taken to our hotels in Dover to freshen up before boarding a coach and driving to a well earned celebration at the Duke of York Royal Military School in Dover. We will be welcomed by a Military Band before being well fed and watered. I take my hat off to the route markers who marked very road junction with orange flags, without fail, so navigation was easy. They did have some fun though because there was a team who brought up the rear of the ride whose task was to collect the flags – and seeing six flags going to near the top of a telegraph pole – or a manure heap liberally covered in flags – must have caused the markers some amusement! Lizzie – an opera singer with great character – who set her own pace all week, left the hotel at 4am, in the dark. Speaking to her over an illicet coffee stop in a village she said she felt like she was in he SAS – stopping at each junction in the dark, getting her torch out – and trying to find which direction the arrows went!

It was a long slog to lunch, near Versailles – most of the journey had been on minor roads with little traffic, but as we approached Paris, the roads became busier, very long and straight with plenty of undulation – and a headwind (speeds varied between 20mph and 100 mp depending on who one spoke to!). Most people’s determination was tested – but we all made it. After lunch (pasta again!) – the food stops were amazing, Discovey Adventure, who organised all the logistics, had a great catering team who set up a field kitchen at each lunch stop with a great variety of salads, cold meats, delicious hot pasta bakes, and huge freshly cooked muffins. What with that, choccy bars at the regular water stops, and the odd beer in the evening, I doubt anyone lost much weight on the trip (certainly not me!).

Next stop – the Arc de Triumph – the most exciting part of the journey. Legs well warmed up – Parisian drivers not wanting to give an inch – and all of us – determined to beat them off the lights. Chaos and medlem – but fun, and fortunately all arrived safely. We formed up, without our bikes, the roundabout around the Arc de Triumph was closed – and for those who have been you will know what a feat that must have been – one of the fastest, most terrifying roundabouts, certainly that I have experienced in the world, for a march to the Arc and a ceremony. Our National Anthem was sung (apparently not a regular occurance as the Arc was built to commerorate various battles between the French and the British over the years), and we gave a rousing rendition of the French National Anthem – though the original author may not have recognised quite so many dum-di-dum’s in our version.

The Champs Elysee – the widest and most beautiful of Paris’ boulevards was then closed as we rode the full length, preceded by a landrover bristeling with photographers with “The Sun” bus at the back – complete with 2 Page 3 girls. The route then took us to the finish – under the Eiffel Tower. What an ending to a remakable journey – everyone who started finished – with quite a number showing huge reserves of courage and determination. A great trip which was suitably celebrated on a boat trip on the Seine on Friday night – grown up food, decent wine – and a great atmosphere.

Saturday was a relaxed morning with the train back to London in the afternoon – so writing this from my garden in Wiltshire. Reflecting on the week it was marvellous, we raised over a million pounds, I met and chatted to a lot of very inspiring people from all walks of life (from retired 3 star generals to private soldiers with missing limbs, from Harry the lorry driver to a grandmother who just wanted to “do her bit”. A great “Band of Brothers”.

Thank you all for your tremendous support.

Thursday 28 May - SOE Day - 55 miles

A very quick note to say that internet connection a tad tricky so not much time to say much. Hotel – cosy with 3 in the room, wine – good.

H4H website has a daily video diary of the trip uploaded .Visit www.helpforheroes.org. Not managed to see it myself – internet challenges.

A day not blessed with good weather. First leg was to a Candian Military cemetary where we learned about the role the Candians made to the Normandy breakout. It might have been a good idea to have read into this campaign in more detail prior to coming – but certainly making up for lost time, with the accompanying military historians giving us both the larger picture and the down to individual tank skirmishes. The area we were in was where the Canadians and Poles in the North and the Americans in the South encircled a large body of German troops – SS Panzer divisions and other experienced hardened soldiers included. Preventing them from escaping was key to the success of the furthe advance into France – and at one stage, the Polish Division held a key area – known as the Falais Gap against Germans trying to break out with further divisions trying to break in to rescue the surrounded troops. Against huge odds, the Poles (all volunteers from around the world) held on and the area was described as being one where you could not walk or drive without stepping on dead bodies. At dinner last night I was told by one of the Brits who came along shortly after that he had to take his vehicle down a lane and the only way throgh was to drive over the bodies of horses (transport) – some of which were not dead – he had to shoot 3 on the way. The horrors of war.

At the memorial service we were given an account by 2 soldiers of how they were shot and what happened to them after. One, in the Rifles was shot in Holland in 1944, the second in Helmand province shortly after the start of Afghanistan. Dave was a Warrant Officer with the Pathfinders of the Parachute Regiment who were sent on a 3 day mission to identify and mark Taliban positions. They went for 3 days but could not get back for 8 weeks as they were completely surrounded and no one could relieve them. They ran out of food on 3 occasions and ammunition once – such was their firefight. All sounds amazing. Dave was shot by an Afghan Policeman from the back, and it was his appalling treatment on arrival back in the UK at Selly Oaks hospital that was the catalyst for the foundation for Help for Heroes. Both very moving stories – and fascinating.

One of the delights of this ride is the testing of one’s humour. On arrival in a town where one is expecting a hotel, to then find that the hotel is a further 5 miles away – and up one of the longest hills of the day makes the body challenged and mind! On the way up my main thought was the beer at the end to find that the hotel had no bar, the hotel next door’s does not open until 7pm and other than MacDonalds there is nothing else. Sheer luxury!

Mind you, after we had eaten dinner, we heard that 2 of the last cyclists were just coming in – so at after 9pm, Mark, who has a broken back and is in a sit-down cycle powered by his hands arrived in the pooring rain – to cheers from all in the hotel. He did get a beer on arrival – and so well deserved!

Tuesday 27th May – British Day – 50 miles

A wet and soggy start to another good day. 11 miles in the rain to Arromanche – where we spent 3 plus hours visiting the museums and learning about the remarkable feat of the building and erecing of the Mulberry Harbour – for those not in the know, within days of the landings, a complete harbour including breakwaters, docks and roads from the docks to the beach was towed from England and built. A memorial service was held overlooking the harbour following a very amusing and moving account of one 19 year old subaltern’s account of his war post June 1944. Jolly cold though – force 5/6 wind and all the cyclists huddled like penguins trying to keep out of the wind. After a field lunch (brilliant caterers cooking food for 300 out of 2 vans on the top of a windy hill) – down to Pegasus Bridge via a further tour of the taking of a strategic battery of guns). Pegasus Bridge was one of the key crossings of the Caen canal which needed to be captured before it was blown up by the Germans and it was captured by a company flown onto the bridge by glider during the early night of 6 June. At the end of the bridge is a cafe, the owner being 4 at the time of the battle living with her parentsin the same cafe, and she gave us a very emotional account of the battle – and what it meant to her family. We crossed the bridge on our bikes – led by a piper – to a “beer on the house”.

Last posts played today – 2. Bananas eaten –I will try and find out (at each water stop copious quantities of bananas are consumed). Sore legs and bums – lots. Hotel – 2 star. Food – most welcome.

Fascinating people on the trip – sat next to a great guy at dinner. He is a long distance lorry driver from North Lincolnshire who read about the charity in The Sun, went on the web site to donate some money, saw the link to the bike ride, applied and was amazed to get in. With the support of his local pub and local friends he raised the £2,000 for the ride and is learning about the significance of an area he has driven through frequently.

Monday 25th May – American Day - 76 miles

Awoke to a cracking thunderstorm with the forecast being for rain all day – what a way to start! Luckily it did not rain once – and indeed at one stage it was pretty hot. Our first major stop, coincing with lunch was St Mere Eglise. This was the centre of theUS airborn landings to secure routes inland after the breakout of the beaches. 101st Airborn Division were responsible for this small town, with the 82nd Airborn securing the North. Having served in the Sinai with battalions from both Divisions made the day more interesting. Our military guides – experts on the various battles – who are accompanying us (though not cycling) – took us through the operations in that area on 6th June (depicted in the film The Longest Day) – and we had an opportunity to visit the US museum in the village. The highlight of the stop was a parachute jump by a team from the Red Devils (serving Parachute Regiment soldiers) into the town followed by a memorial where the wreath layers were a serving US Colonel, one of the US riders and a rider whose son was killed in Afganistan exactly a year ago. As you can imagine, the words “We shall Remember them” was said with not many dry eyes or lumps in the throat.

Our route took us long Omaha Beach to the US cemetary where we were addresseed by 2 ex British Naval officers who as young officers were on the landing craft bringing the US soldiers ashore. We were told by one that having dropped his company in the shallows, within 10 minutes, not a single one had survived. A moving memorial service followed including the singing of the American National Anthem – not the best performance as you can imagine, however having never sung it before, the words amazed me – all about fighting on foreign shores – very fitting. The cemetary itself was moving, row upon row of crosses for some of the US servicmen killed in Normandy whose bodies had not been repatriated to the US.

A weary crowd then cycled the final 16 miles to our hotels in Bayeux – an amazing first day and for all those wondering – this area of France is not flat!

Sunday 24th May - The Off - 6 miles

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/SiJmrEO5_cI/AAAAAAAAAIA/gPxdFqv8MkM/s200/IMG_2010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341944998071500226" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/SiJmq85IsjI/AAAAAAAAAH4/tVAod1RVX5I/s200/IMG_2013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341944996101141042" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/SiJmqhtaERI/AAAAAAAAAHw/SjSPv7AHfBM/s200/IMG_2017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341944988804190482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/SiJmqV-47jI/AAAAAAAAAHo/O0XQ5W-68W4/s200/IMG_2024.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341944985656290866" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CFQPlhCl378/SiJmqKIalzI/AAAAAAAAAHg/wJUqpzMnoyY/s200/IMG_2025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341944982475020082" />
An early assembly at Southwick Park, now the headquarters of the Defence Police, but in 1940 a private house until it was requisitioned by the Navy. In 1944 the house became the headquarters of Naval planning for D-Day, and in the June it was the forward headquarters for Eisenhower. It was here that the Eisenhower gave the order to invade Europe on 6th June – one of the riskiest and biggest decisions ever made in militayr history. Apparently having given the order, he then drafted his letter of resignation – so high was the level of confidence!

For our departure, parts of the house and grounds had been trasformed back to June 1994, with members of the Military History Society playing the parts of members of the planning staff – down to radio operators and typists. The original map of the channel had been kept and we were briefed on the plans for the invasion.

300 of us then formed up with our cycles in front of the house, including a team of 8 from Headley Court, the rehabilitation centre for wounded servicemen, 3 who were taking part in the ride sitting on cycles powered by their arms, and several without limbs! The first addresss, by Bryn Parry, the founder of Help for Heroes told the story of his son, Tom, aged 23 having left Sandhurst only 6 months ago and who is currently in Afganistan experiencing intensive operational activity – who, 2 weeks ago, lost a member of his Platoon killed with his Platoon Sergeant being badly injured. Next was Ross Kemp – a TV personality -, then the Second Sea Lord (a senior Admiral) all of whom gave us a rousing send-off, and it really brought home to me the significance of what we were doing. Our final tak was by the Mother of one of the riders whoherself was a junior officer in Southwick House at the time of the invasion and who lost a husband and brother in the fighting – who gave us a most emotional send off. Not a dry eye amongst us!

Family and friends, including Amanda and Sophie – lined the route out of the Southwick Park – and were we were cheared off on the start of the adventure. What was remarkable was that the route to the ferry terminal 6 miles - was lined all the way with people clapping us as we went along – a tremendous support from the people of Portsmouth.

Short, 3 hour ferry crossing, in calm conditions, to Cherbourg, then into hotels to sleep and prepare for the first day.

Full Itinerary for the Ride

The full itinerary for the ride is below. It looks like a fascinating and probably emotional week.

Sunday 24th May. Day 1: Portsmouth – Cherbourg. It’s an early start with registration taking place at 8am in Southwick Park. After registration there will be a rare opportunity to visit the D-Day map room from where Eisenhower made all his tactical decisions and also some of the museums at Southwick Park. We’ll then have a send off lunch at Southwick House before cycling down to the ferry terminal, leaving our bikes with the transport crew and boarding the afternoon ferry to Cherbourg as foot passengers! It is about a 3hr crossing. After disembarking in Cherbourg we will be picked up by coaches and driven to our hotel for the evening. Cycle 5 miles.

Monday 25th May. Day 2: Cherbourg - Bayeux. Cycle to Ste Mere Eglise for this day remembering the American Airborne Forces, where we will stop to lay a wreath in the village square at the memorial. We continue on to visit the main American landing beach, Omaha before heading for our night stop in the beautiful town of Bayeux. Cycle approx 75 miles.

Tuesday 26th May. Day 3: Bayeux – Caen. Today, the British Day, we visit the coast where the troops landed. First we tour the museum at Arromanches and see the film footage of the historical events that took place. After a spectacular fly past display, we head onto the beaches Gold, Juno, and Sword where guides will be waiting to deliver some history at your leisure. From here we pedal on to Merville Battery, from where we take in the facts of this operation and a view over the sea. Once the group is together, we will head back down towards Caen, but not before an unforgettable experience at Pegasus Bridge where the first house to be liberated from the Germans in June 1944 still stands. Here we are piped over the Bridge by Pipers and after a gathering and historical briefing we ride off as the bugler sounds The Advance. Cycle approx 50 miles.

Wednesday 27th May. Day 4: Caen – Lisieux. Today, the Canadian and Polish are remembered as we cycle from Caen down to Falaise, where the Germans were very nearly defeated! After a stop in the square to hear the Guides explain how close it was we take a spectacular climb to the Mace. Here we will lay a wreath to commemorate the Polish soldiers, before continuing on to Lisieux. Cycle approx 75 miles.

Thursday 28th May. Day 5: Lisieux – Evreux. The French Resistance and Special Forces Day. Today we will remember the brave soldiers and hear the stories of the much celebrated SOE Agents, who parachuted into the countryside to work undercover against the enemy. We will have SOE individuals who were there at the time, as well as modern day women when we remember those no longer with us at a local airfield. We shall once again lay a wreath in the memory of resistance fighters. Then we continue to Evreux. Cycle approx 55 miles.

Friday 29th May. Day 6: Evreux – Paris. Free French day- The liberation of Paris. An exciting day today as it was back then, as we cross the river and follow the route many soldiers took in the liberation of Paris. With personal memories from those who were there, we cycle towards the capital city where a wonderful celebration welcome awaits us. A wreath will be laid at the Arc de Triomphe as we cycle past and down the Champs Elysees and onto the finishing point at the iconic Eiffel Tower. A long, emotional yet rewarding day to finish the cycle challenge. Cycle approx 70 miles.

Saturday 30th May. Day 7: Paris – London. By rail.

3 days to go...

Only 3 days to go and the nerves are starting to kick in - will I be fit enough? Due to the work of Headley Court (the main beneficary so far of money from Help for Heroes) - and his great determination - he took part in the London Marathon last weekend and completed it. An article (by the great supporter of Help for Heroes, The Sun Paper) is at: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/campaigns/our_boys/article2397415.ece

24th May is "D" Day when we assemble in Portsmouth, so not much time for training or raising money to go. As this ride is for the benefit of those wounded soldiers, like Ben, I am having a last minute push for additional sponsorship. If you have not kindly sponsored me so far, please do on www.justgiving.com/nigelmurray - and if you have sponsored me, and know anyone who fits into the following categories, please encourage them to give to this very worthwhile cause:

- they want to/ought to support this very worthwhile charity
- they know me and believe that my cycling 350 miles in 5 days is enough of a challenge to warrant parting with cash
- they find the photo of me in Lycra (below) amusing or indeed will happily pay to not see any more
- they have been meaning to sponsor, but have not managed it yet

I found out by reading the recently published Help for Heroes Annual Report that 98% of the money given to Help for Heroes actually goes towards providing facilities for the wounded. I am told this is the most from any UK charity and has been made possible by admin costs and salaries being found from the sale of Help for Heroes merchandise. So - your sponsorship will go to where you want it to go.

Thank you.

Nigel

Lycra (Spandex)

<img style="display:block; Luckily I have been very fortunate to have the support of a friend who has not only lent me his go-faster road bike but also rather patiently takes me on ever longer rides (patient as he is continually waiting for me to catch up!). Not sure how many of you have ridden a go-faster bike, but they are terrifying – thin little tyres which make it particularly wobbly and more gears than I will learn how to use – so that in theory a good average speed is maintained. Going up hill is easier than on my mountain bike, but the way down is a real case of gritting one’s teeth, focusing on the horizon, hanging on for grim death and hoping that there are no holes in the road. It keeps the adrenalin going though….

Going back to the training programme – riding a bike during the week at the moment is just a tad challenging, and for those who know my lifestyle they will agree that there are simply not enough hours in my day. Someone did suggest riding in London, however I am rather keen to live long enough to at least start the ride in May! This is hopefully going to soon change as we are planning to move house to the middle of the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire – further South West than current – in early April. As well as having a pub opposite the house, the other advantage is that the station is a good 10 mile ride away (rather than the 800 yards at the moment). The theory is therefore that I will ride to the train, leaving the bike in Wiltshire, then bike back home in the evening – trying to avoid going via the pub. Sounds like a plan, though whether I will stick to it is another matter.

Many people have enquired about my Lycra (or Spandex to those in the US). Well – I am pleased to report that I am still Lycra free, though having cycled 35 miles in one outing last weekend, I am beginning to warm to the idea – or at least by nether regions are…the kit list arrived this week, and as well as recommending Lycra we are recommended to take all sorts of strange ointments, pills and potions – as if pain is expected. Maybe the organisers are telling us something!

Training in New York

For the last week I have been in New York for the annual Legal Tech show where over 10,000 people in the industry all assemble in the New York Hilton hotel for 3 days + of viewing new products, giving and attending seminars and having meetings with clients, partners and prospects. Accordingly in amongst all the talking, eating and drinking in various local restaurants and bars I did not manage much training in the week other than a couple of trips to the hotel gym until the last day when I hired a bike in Central Park. I must admit to a short ride for a number of reasons - minus 11 degrees centigade is a good one, and although the park looked beautiful in the snow - the roads were equally beautiful with plentiful ice. I did however manage to find a couple of Brazilian tourists to take a photo (the fact they were Brazilian not being of any consequence). Arrived back in England this morning to more snow - and the side roads of Farnham and surrounds being icy - so I suspect not much cycling this weekend.

Very amusing

My thanks to Chris Dale for the very amusing entry on his blog: http://chrisdale.wordpress.com/2009/01/23/murray-to-cycle-across-the-channel/

Worth a read.

The Finish

This picture of "me" was kindly sent today by a kind friend in Texas.
